Peru is located in the Heart
♥ of Steamboat Trace.
The hiking
and
biking trail built in 1995 by the Nemaha Natural Resources District (NRD) was purchased by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy from Burlington
Northern and is currently managed by the NRD. The backbone of
this 21 mile trail
runs from just south of Nebraska City, through Peru to
south of Brownville, just a few miles from Indian Cave State Park.
Dr. Bill Clemente, who teaches at Peru State College
created a short video of the Sherman Memorial area carvings on Steamboat Trace
which is included in his blog of Peru. View the video
and Bill's Blog
"Around Peru" . This area has been nominated as one of the
"Seven
Wonders of Southeast Nebraska"
|
The trail head is located on the north end of 5th Street
where there is ample parking and a covered pavilion/picnic area. Primitive camping, running water and restrooms are
available at the trailhead.
This area is fast becoming popular with birding
enthusiasts. Dr. Bill Clemente at Peru State College has prepared a
birding exhibit for Steamboat Trace which includes photos of birds that have
been seen along the trail. New in 2007 is a slide show of sculptures
seen along the trail.

Visitors come from
neighboring states to enjoy the beauty of the trail. For Peruvians it's the
best for a walk, a hike, bike ride or a trail run. Winter sports
enthusiasts enjoy cross country skiing & hiking. Spring & Summer
attract bikers, hikers and ecology and conservation based tours. Fall is
considered most spectacular by visitors to Steamboat Trace. The bluffs along the Missouri provide a scenic panorama as you travel the trail.
A scenic drive closely parallels Steamboat Trace.
Enjoy a scenic auto tour of the bluffs along our Country
Lanes, it's well worth the trip anytime.
The Trail for All
Seasons is also inviting to photographers and birdwatchers as well as fun
run's and special events.
